Why Tradies Sleep Like Sh*t (And How to Actually Fix It)

You're up at 5am, on site all day, and absolutely wrecked by evening — and you still can't sleep properly. Here's why, and what to actually do about it.

You're up at 5am, on site by 7, lifting, digging, or wiring all day. By the time you get home you can barely keep your eyes open. You should be sleeping like a log.

But you're not.

You're lying there staring at the ceiling. Waking up at 3am for no reason. Feeling like you've barely slept when the alarm goes off. Sound familiar?

Here's what's actually going on — and how to fix it.

Being Physically Knackered Doesn't Mean You'll Sleep Well

This is the bit most blokes don't know. Tiredness and sleep are not the same thing.

When your body is under physical stress — heavy lifting, long days on your feet, heat exposure — it releases cortisol, a stress hormone that keeps you alert and ready to work. That's useful at 7am. Not so useful at 10pm when you're trying to wind down.

High cortisol in the evening means your brain thinks it's still in work mode. You're tired, but wired. Your body hasn't got the signal that the day is over.

Physical fatigue fills your limbs. Cortisol keeps your head racing.

Here's the one no one wants to hear: that cold beer after work isn't helping you sleep — it's making it worse.

Alcohol makes you fall asleep faster, yes. But it trashes your sleep quality. It kills REM sleep (the deep, restorative stuff), causes you to wake up more in the second half of the night, and raises your cortisol levels overnight.

The result? You sleep 8 hours and still feel like garbage.

A couple of pints isn't going to ruin your life, but if you're using it to “switch off,” you're borrowing sleep now and paying it back with interest.

Your Phone Is Making It Worse Too

Scrolling through your phone right before bed hits your eyes with blue light — the same type of light that signals to your brain it's the middle of the day. Your brain suppresses melatonin (the sleep hormone) and stays alert.

Add in the endless scroll, the stressful news, the WhatsApp notifications from your site group chat — and your nervous system is still fired up even when your body is horizontal.

Practical Fixes That Actually Work

You don't need a sleep specialist or fancy supplements. You need consistency and a few small changes.

No screens 30 minutes before bed. Put your phone down at 9:30pm if you're going to bed at 10. Not in another room — actually put it face down somewhere out of reach. Use those 30 minutes to eat something, read something, or just sit in silence.

Eat protein before bed. A small protein-rich snack 30–60 minutes before sleep — think a couple of boiled eggs, Greek yoghurt, or a protein shake — helps your body produce serotonin and keeps blood sugar stable overnight. You'll sleep deeper and wake up less.

Make your room dark. Properly dark. Blackout blinds if you've got early summer sun coming in. Even a crack of light under a door can disrupt sleep cycles. This one costs nothing if you already have curtains and a towel.

Consistent wake time. This is the one that's hardest for tradies because shifts vary, but it's also the most powerful. Your sleep is regulated by your body clock. If you wake at different times every day, your body never locks in a rhythm. Pick a wake time and stick to it 7 days a week — even on weekends. Your sleep will improve within 2 weeks.

Cool your room down. Your body temperature drops naturally when you sleep. A room that's too warm fights this. Crack a window, use a lighter duvet, or get a fan running. 16–18°C is ideal.

What Good Sleep Does for a Tradie

  • Faster muscle recovery (your body repairs tissue during deep sleep — not while you're resting on the couch)
  • Better reaction time and decision-making on site
  • Lower injury risk
  • More energy for training after work
  • Regulated appetite — bad sleep tanks your testosterone and spikes hunger hormones

You can eat well and train hard, but if your sleep is wrecked, you're building on sand.

Sort Your Sleep First

Everything else — the training, the nutrition, the energy levels — works better when sleep is dialled in. It's not optional. It's foundational.

Start with one change this week. No screens before bed. That's it. See how you feel after 7 days.
